Destinations: Vientiane – Nam Ngum – Vientiane

Itinerary

Day 1: Vientiane
We commence our Vientiane experience with a traditional Baci Ceremony to welcome you to Laos, performed within a local family home.

The Lao believe that like elephants, humans have 32 souls, which at regular intervals need to be reunited with the body. So to tempt the soul to come back, chants and offerings are given around a pyramid (makben) constructed from banana leaves and marigolds.

After the unique experience, we continue the sightseeing tour to the National Museum, displaying archaeological artifacts and information on the country natural history with several rooms devoted to the independence of Laos, from the revolutionary wars to the Vietnam War.

Following lunch at a local restaurant, we will visit Wat Si Saket, the oldest temple to have survived the Siamese war of 1828 with over more than 8000 Buddha statues.

Heading across the road to Ho Pra Keo, we visit the former home-temple of the Emerald Buddha statue with its interesting collection of Buddha statues, antiques and array of artifacts found in and around Vientiane.

Overnight at your hotel

Day 2: Vientiane
We begin this morning with a visit to the main symbolic stupa in Laos, ‘Pha That Luang’, covering the original small stupa containing a piece of the chest bone of Buddha.

A short drive takes us to the land-mark of Vientiane, Patuxay Monument, in memory of those who died during the war, with an amazing panoramic view over Vientiane on top of the monument.

We continue the sightseeing tour to the famous Carol Cassidy Gallery, to observe the process of natural dye making and weaving of traditional Lao textiles.

After lunch, our next stop is the eccentric and interesting Buddah Park, located approximately 25km from Vientiane town.

The park contains Buddha statues of Shiva, Vishnu, Arjuna, Buddha and just about every other Hindu or Buddhist deity, all in modern styles and shapes, with one being the largest Reclining Buddha in Laos.

We return to the hotel mid-late afternoon.

Overnight at your hotel
(Breakfast included)

Day 3: Nam Ngum Lake
We leave the city of Vientiane behind today on Road No 13, for a 90km excursion to the impressive Nam Ngum Lake, which supplies most of the country’s electricity, as well as selling electricity to Thailand.

On-route, we make a stop at a Hmong village to visit a local Hmong market and Vang Xang, where we visit the interesting Archaeological site, built during the Mone-Khmer Empire between the 8th and 11th century.

After a scrumptious lunch on a boat restaurant, we embark on a boat cruise, enjoying the picturesque scenery of hundreds of islets scattered across the lake, with the enormous tree trunks jutting out of the water and visit to the fishing villages within the islands.

On the way back to Vientiane, we make a stop at the salt abstraction site at Ban Keun and Dong Ma Khai Market, where the locals gather to sell their local delicacies of wild animals and a large range of insects.

We return to Vientiane in the late afternoon. Trip ends.

Day 1: City and Weaving Village Tour
This morning our guide will meet you at your hotel for an exciting 3 day journey of this fabulous town.

We commence our journey with a leisurely sightseeing stroll through this magnificent township.

Our first stop takes us to visit the National Museum, which was the former Royal Palace, then continue to Wat Mai, the early nineteenth century temple with its most striking feature of the gilded relief panels.

With an orientation of the towns centre, we continue onto Wat Xieng Thong, a magnificent example of the Luang Prabang traditional architectural style, complimented by the stunning setting along the Mekong River.

We head out for lunch to a traditional restaurant and enjoy some authentic Lao food before driving to our next stop, the most famous waterfall in Laos – Kriang Si Waterfall.

Passing through the spectacular mountainous areas, we make a stop at a local Khmu and Hmong village where you have a wonderful experience seeing these two ethnic minority groups in their most natural form.

Arriving at the falls, we have a an easy walk, from the base of the mountain through the lush forest area, passing by the magnificent turquoise pools and visiting the bear rescue centre, which is set within the falls area.

We return to Luang Prabang in the late afternoon.

Overnight at your hotel
(Lunch included)

Day 2: Pak Ou Caves and Wine village
Early rise is certainly well worth the awakening.

We head to the centre of town bright and early to observe and participate in hundreds of monks walking through the streets, as we take part in the traditional morning ritual of ‘morning alms’ or ‘the giving to monks’.

After breakfast at the hotel, we set out on a leisurely approximately 1.5 hour cruise on a long-tail boat along the Mekong River, snaking through vine covered hills, observing life along the river with women washing clothes along the banks, kids swimming and splashing about as the dense jungle mountains creep past us.

Arriving at the confluence of the Nam Ou River into the Mekong, we reach Pak Ou or known by the locals as Tam Ting Caves, admiring hundreds of Buddha statues placed here over centuries ago.

After lunch at a riverside restaurant, we continue with a short journey upstream to visit Ban Xang Hai Village.

For centuries this village has made the earthen jars used as fermenting containers for Lao wine. Nowadays, it also specializes in producing a wide range of lau lao (Lao whisky) and lau hai (Lao wine). Be daring and be sure to try just a little!

We return to Luang Prabang around 4pm.

Overnight at your hotel
(Breakfast included)

Day 3: Ban Phanom and local lunch
We head out of town this morning to visit ‘Tai Lu’ ethnic minority weaving village in Ban Phanom, famous for its intricately woven textiles and special hand weaving techniques.

A stroll to the neighboring village of Ban Xieng Kong, we have a very interesting demonstration of the process and art work involved with Sa (Mulberry) paper making, which is then used for a variety of handicrafts such as lanterns, cards, books and gift wrap just to name a few.

We have plenty of free time to stroll around the village, admiring the beautiful handicrafts and picking up a few bargains before returning to town!

Today, we have the privilege of spending time within a Lao family home to participate in cooking up a traditional Lao style lunch, learning the secrets of all the Lao specialties, from the ingredients through to the intricate techniques.

We return to your hotel after lunch. Trip ends.
